Dueling Sharp-Tailed Grouse
Sharp-Tailed Grouse in northern Montana. This species leks, which means that males display and compete with each other at sunrise (sometimes sunset as well) on a select spot (the lek), and females walk amongst them and choose the most dominant males for mating. These birds display in this wings-out pose, stomp their feet up to 20-times a second, chatter, and may chase down other males they think are not as badass as they are. This results in standoffs, like you see here, where the males will then get really low, and bluff-charge the other male to get him to jump. When a males scares another into a jump, they may jump up as well, talons out, and fight in the air. It's all pretty amazing to see! To get this shot I was laying down in a ghillie suit, barely moving, for the entire time they were on the lek one morning.
