too-wah wahng-itch

too-wah wahng-itch

Red Fox, Yellowstone National Park. It is important to remember that this land was once cared for by other people, particularly the Shoshone. The Shoshone had a few dialects but in this area the red fox was probably called the "too-wah wahng-itch." Red foxes are famously known as tricksters in the mythologies of many cultures, but it's depressingly difficult to find stories from specific Native American cultures with any given animal. The common themes seem to be intelligent, clever, and sneaky. It describes them well. Foxes always seem to be thinking, planning.... They're beautiful, intelligent, essential animals within their landscape. This is one of those animals that feels like a myth, like a spirit, when you encounter one moving through the forest.
