Bear Cub Cuddles
A coastal brown bear sow and cub, Lake Clark National Park, Alaska. This cub is in its first year, and like a good mother bear she is probably pretty tired. She found a good lookout, a nice place to hide from the big boars ambling around, and decided it was a good time for a quick nap. The cub had other ideas, but eventually took a quick snooze as well. This mother is in peak lactation months (June-July) and this one cub will drink up to 45 ounces per day, which is over a third of a gallon. Bear cubs need to grow quickly in order to survive the next winter so bears have some of the fattiest milk of all mammals. Human and cow milk is about 4%, but brown bear milk is around 25% fat.
