Golden Mule Deer
Mule deer at sunrise, Yellowstone National Park. Something had gotten into me this fall about sunrise light, and in one of my early mornings trying to see what opportunities arose in the small window of sunrise light, this buck walked up over a ridge to look at me for a moment. The Shoshone people once notably called this area home, and some names they had for deer were shock-e-re-ah and sogohdiyah. These deer are common in western states in open brush country, and throughout their lives they need to be on guard against wolves, coyotes, mountain lions, bears, and even wolverines!
