Banded Watersnake Hunting

Banded Watersnake Hunting

A juvenile banded watersnake in De Soto National Forest, Mississippi. This species is mostly aquatic, and feeds on fish and amphibians. It uses its vomeronasal organ, or Jacobson's organ, to detect parvalbumins, which are a type of protein found in the cutaneous mucous of its prey. This allows them to effectively smell underwater.
