One-Eyed Gator Stare

One-Eyed Gator Stare

A big alligator in Grand Bay National Wildlife Reserve, Mississippi. This alligator is probably about 8-feet or more. An average adult will grow to be around 13-feet long. You can see in this photo that this alligator is blind in the left eye. Adult males are territorial, and given the extent of injuries on this animal, I feel there's a chance it's a battle-hardened male, but large females will also defend prime territory. Alligators are usually non-aggressive towards humans, but as I drifted closer in my kayak for this photo, the gator slid off the bank into the water and faced me directly, giving me a little shot of adrenaline. So cool! I'm naming him(?) Chubbs (the one-eyed gator from Happy Gilmore)!
