Scars on an aspen tree from a young black bear that climbed the tree years ago, in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. Black bear cubs are almost always climbing something while they trail their mother, and it is their first defense if danger comes around. While these scars suggest a big bear, the tree was much smaller when the bear scarred this tree.
