Abstract Ram
Bighorn sheep ram near Wapiti, Wyoming, in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Do you see that horizontally-flattened pupil? That evolved to give them especially sharp eyesight and range on the horizon, to see predators! When they dip their head to eat, their eyes even tilt slightly in their heads to keep that pupil nearly horizontal. You can see the same pupil shape (for the same reason) in other prey animals like horses, deer, goats, other sheep, etc. - I went out that day specifically with this photo in mind. I wanted a photo of a ram that I've never seen before, something unique. This was a tough angle to get, and to get this chance with a ram that had a beautiful curl took a little luck. My favorite things about bighorn sheep are their horns and their beautiful amber-colored eyes, and I wanted this photo to highlight both. One of my favorite photographers, Tin Man Lee, taught me a golden rule that I now constantly think about - If there were 5 other people there taking photos too, would they have gotten the same photo you did? That was the essence of it anyways. It motivates me to try to be as creative as I can.
