Three-Toed Box Turtle
Three-toed box turtle, Arkansas. There are two species of land-dwelling turtles in Arkansas; the ornate box turtle (with yellow spots) and the three-toed box turtle seen here. Some of you may see this and want to call it a tortoise. Tortoises are just turtles that live on land, right? Well, yes, but there are also some turtles that live on land, like box turtles (don't toss them in the water!). If you live in the south, you've no-doubt seen these. Unfortunately, they're often killed while crossing roads, and even more unfortunately, many drivers don't care to help them or even just avoid them. I've spent years living in the south and when I'm timing a drive, I have to account for stopping for box turtles and snakes, and helping them across the road or relocating them a little. I have borderline anxiety driving down there! So what should you do? First off, try to miss them. But if you can stop, help the turtle get off the road in the direction it was heading. You have to use your judgement here but if you absolutely have to, you can relocate them as close to that area as possible, in good habitat. Please brake for wildlife!
